I was lucky enough to go to the Beverley Puppet Festival at the weekend which, when in breath-taking form, was definitely not for children. The most amazing show was from Steve Mottram, a genius of puppetry and puppet/automata making/magic. I’m not sure why puppetry is so belittled in our country – let’s put the blame on Punch and Judy. Surely it’s one of the most imaginative art forms – a test of physical strength, body control, story telling, movement, sculpture, music, characterisation, visual presence, lighting – everything!
Here’s a link to a video about Steve Mottram’s show, ‘The Seas of Organillo’, and I challenge you not to be impressed…go to 5:45 for some incredible ‘swimming’ puppet hands that were absolutely stunning in the show – you could almost feel the audiences’ wonder when they came on, brilliantly lit.
